Scene after ceiling collapses into Pizza Express at Salford Quays

Emergency services were called to the restaurant at around 10.30am on Monday.

Horrifying pictures show the aftermath of a ceiling collapse that forced diners to flee a busy Pizza Express restaurant.

Around 200 terrified customers were evacuated from the popular chain in Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, after part of the roof caved in.

Six fire engines and a technical rescue unit attended the scene on Trafford Road following reports of the collapse at around 10.30am on Monday.

Shocking images from the scene show a huge pile of rubble and debris where the ceiling once was, along with large cracks in the walls of the building.

No one was injured in the incident, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

But three fire engines remained on site until around 2pm while structural engineers assessed the damage.

The restaurant is part of a £750m shopping and leisure development at Salford Quays, which includes the Lowry arts centre and the BBC.

A spokesperson for Pizza Express said the restaurant would be closed until further notice.

"The safety of our customers and team members is our priority and we are working with the emergency services and structural engineers to ensure the restaurant is safe before we reopen," they said.

"We would like to thank our team members and customers for their cooperation and understanding." ```
